Volume Submission Deadline Theme & Overview
Vol. 24 No. 2 16:00 on May 31 (Fri), 2024
Area Studies at SFC: Current Perspectives and Future Trajectories
Area Studies is an interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary field of study. As such, there is a strong affinity between SFC's philosophy of education and research and Area Studies. With its focus on issues of global conflict and cooperation, and the governance that people seek, Area Studies at SFC has sought clues to understanding people and society, while deepening our understanding of human life, language, and culture, and making flexible and proactive use of science and technology. This issue of the Journal reviews the current activities of Area Studies at SFC and identifies directions in which the field is developing. Until now, Area Studies in Japan has been led by research institutions, mostly graduate schools. However, just as SFC was the first place in Japan to orient policy studies as an undergraduate education, Area Studies at SFC has been promoted as an undergraduate education in close collaboration with language and communication education. This issue of the SFC Journal describes SFC as a new venue for the development of Area Studies in Japan and illustrates the potential of the SFC.
